About Lyphe and the challenge
Lyphe is the UK's largest online medical cannabis clinic. Patients fill out an eligibility form, book a video consultation with a specialist doctor, receive a prescription, and collect their treatment from a nearby pharmacy. Follow-up appointments allow the doctor to review progress and adjust dosages. The service is entirely online, which means organic search is Lyphe's primary patient acquisition channel.
When Lyphe's new website launched in November 2022, the team needed to build an audience from scratch in one of the most restrictive content environments in UK healthcare. The FSA and MHRA prohibit direct therapeutic claims about cannabis, which rules out the kind of benefit-led copy that accelerates most health sites. Paid advertising is effectively unavailable: Meta and Google block cannabis ads, and workarounds like cloaking landing pages carry account-ban risk and produce high cost-per-click and poor conversion rates. SEO was the only scalable channel.
Lyphe reached out to NUOPTIMA because of our track record in regulated and cannabinoid industries. They started with our basic SEO package: 16,000 words of content per month, three authoritative backlinks per month, and ongoing technical SEO support.

Who we were targeting
Lyphe's patients search for medical cannabis online because the entire service, from eligibility to prescription, runs through the site, and paid ads are effectively closed off in this category. The keyword and content plan was built around how those patients actually search, at every stage from general awareness to condition-specific and local queries.
- Patients researching medical cannabis for a specific condition or symptom, reached through the "medical cannabis for [condition]" and "natural remedies for [condition]" keyword categories.
- Patients at the decision stage searching commercial terms like "medical cannabis clinic" and "cancard UK application," where Lyphe needed to appear as a market leader.
- Patients searching by location, reached through "medical cannabis + location" keywords, since the service is online but patients still think in local terms when looking for a clinic.

What we did
Keyword research
Our SEO strategy covered four keyword categories to build comprehensive topical authority:
| Keyword Category | Objective | Approach |
| Medical Cannabis Keywords | Rank high for all related keywords. | Research and identify a wide range of keywords, from general to specific, including long-tail keywords. |
| Medical Cannabis for Specific Conditions | Cover all 'medical cannabis for [condition]' keywords. | Identify conditions treatable by medical cannabis and pair them with 'medical cannabis' in keywords. |
| Medical Cannabis + Location Keywords | Cover all 'medical cannabis + location' keywords. | Target local search by combining 'medical cannabis' with specific geographic locations. |
| Natural Remedies for Specific Conditions | Cover all 'natural remedies for [condition]' keywords. | Include keywords for natural or alternative treatments for various conditions, aligning with medical cannabis interest. |
Priority terms included commercial queries like "medical cannabis clinic" and "cancard UK application," positioning Lyphe as a market leader for patients at the decision stage.
Writing compliant content
The core content challenge: we could not make direct claims about cannabis's therapeutic effects. Our solution was a rigorous compliance layer built around FSA and MHRA guidelines.
Referencing. Every article cited peer-reviewed scientific literature rather than asserting medical benefits directly. Studies were linked in a bibliography section, so readers could verify the evidence themselves. Disclaimers noted that more research is needed before drawing conclusions. The Fibromyalgia article below shows the approach:

Writing process. Writers received detailed briefings on medical cannabis compliance before drafting. The lead editor supplied examples of approved language to reduce error rates and editing cycles.
Editing. Every piece went through a five-stage review:
- Initial review: editors checked grammar and regulatory compliance.
- Revisions: writers addressed all editor comments.
- Final review: a second pass caught anything missed.
- Expert check: Lyphe's own team flagged any remaining issues.
- Publication: content went live only after full approval.
We produced more than 128 compliant articles through this process.
Backlinks
Our link-building program targeted authoritative healthcare and cannabis industry sites. We created shareable, informative content those sites found worth linking to, targeting a range of platforms from industry blogs to healthcare news outlets. The goal was a diverse link profile that built domain authority, not just raw link count. Articles containing these backlinks also ranked for their own keyword sets, compounding Lyphe's visibility.
The result was 439 high-quality backlinks and 1.8k total inbound links to targeted URLs by the end of the measured period.
Technical SEO
Alongside content and links, we improved Lyphe's site for navigation, page speed, and mobile responsiveness. Technical health underpins keyword ranking stability, particularly for a new domain competing against established health publishers.

Key takeaways
- In regulated industries where paid ads are blocked or high-risk, organic SEO is not just a nice-to-have: it is the only scalable acquisition channel. Lyphe reached 49,812 monthly visits in 12 months in a niche where paid advertising is heavily restricted, while a paid alternative would have required cloaking workarounds, high CPC, and permanent account-ban exposure.
- Compliance and content quality are not trade-offs. The five-stage editorial process and scientific referencing framework let us produce 128+ articles that satisfied FSA and MHRA guidelines while still ranking for high-intent keywords. Authoritative backlinks from healthcare publishers reinforced the domain's credibility with both regulators and Google.
- Topical breadth beats narrow targeting for new domains. Covering medical cannabis by condition, by location, and by natural-remedy angle gave Lyphe 21,804 ranking keywords within a year, creating compounding visibility that no single keyword focus could have achieved at the same speed.
