Best Accounting, Bookkeeping and Fractional CFO Firms for MSPs (2026)

Three different levels of help, nine firms, every provider claim checked against its live site on 24 August 2026.

9  firms 3  service levels Verified 24 Aug 2026

How we verified this

Last vendor review: 24 August 2026. Every claim about a firm was checked against that firm's live site on that date. Where this page draws on anything else, such as our own conversations with MSP finance operators, it says so in place.

Most owners of managed service providers (MSPs) find out their books are wrong at the worst possible moment: a bank asks for management accounts, a buyer opens due diligence, or the quarter closes profitable on paper while the bank balance says otherwise. Recurring revenue, agreement billing, deferred revenue and vendor pass-through make MSP accounting genuinely different from the generic small-business books most local accountants keep.

There are three genuinely different levels of help, and most comparison pages treat them as one category. They are not. You can buy bookkeeping, someone who keeps the ledger clean and the reconciliations current. You can buy management accounts, a monthly pack that tells you your real gross margin per agreement and where the labour is loaded. Or you can buy a fractional chief financial officer (CFO), sometimes styled a finance director (FD), who sits in the numbers with you and owns the decisions the numbers force. The price, the cadence and the person you deal with are different at each level.

This page is for MSP owners who have hit the ceiling of the generalist accountant. It is not a list of every bookkeeper with an MSP landing page, and it is not for enterprise information technology (IT) departments. If your problem is growth rather than the books, start with the MSP marketing agencies list instead.

Where our money comes from

NUOPTIMA is a growth agency for MSPs. We sell marketing, not accounting, so nobody on this page competes with us and nobody paid to be here. One relationship is disclosed in place on the relevant entry.

Method

How this list was built

  1. Live site verification. Every fact in every entry comes from the firm's own site, fetched on 24 August 2026, including the About and pricing pages, not only the homepage. Where a figure could not be verified, the absence is stated rather than filled in.
  2. MSP focus had to be real. A single "industries we serve" page does not qualify. Each firm here either serves MSPs exclusively or publishes substantial MSP-specific work: professional services automation (PSA) integrations, MSP benchmarks, MSP-specific content.
  3. Order. The MSP Finance Team is listed first because it is the only firm on this page folding bookkeeping, management accounts, a fractional FD and mentoring into one product, and one of three firms here whose pricing you can read before speaking to anyone. That is an editorial call about completeness and transparency, not a quality ranking, and a relationship is disclosed in that entry. Judge the order against the reasoning and ignore it if you disagree.
  4. Service level first. Each firm is labelled bookkeeping, full finance stack, or CFO-led. A page that ranks a $500-a-month bookkeeper against a fractional CFO on the same criteria is not helping anyone choose.
  5. Ledger platform recorded where stated. Whether a firm is built around QuickBooks or Xero decides how much of your existing stack survives the switch, so it is recorded per entry where the site says.
  6. What we could not check. None of these firms publish audited client counts or retention figures. No scale claim below is independently verified, and we say so per entry where one is made.

Numbering is navigational, not hierarchical

Entry 1 is not better than entry 9. They solve different problems at different sizes, and the right one depends far more on your revenue and your ledger platform than on this order.

Professional services automation (PSA). Certified public accountant (CPA). Every cell above was read off the firm's own site, so "Not stated" means the site does not say. One pattern worth reading off this table: every United States firm here is built around QuickBooks. The only Xero-native options are in the United Kingdom and Canada, so a United States MSP on Xero is currently choosing between a cross-border firm and a ledger migration.

The MSP Finance Team homepage with the headline Enabling Happier and Wealthier MSP Owners and tiered service pricing
mspfinanceteam.com, captured 24 August 2026

The homepage reads "Enabling Happier & Wealthier MSP Owners", and the offer behind it is the most complete in this category: bookkeeping, monthly management accounts, a fractional FD, strategic mentoring and tax filing as one stack rather than a referral chain. Nobody else on this page folds all of that into one product, and no United States firm we verified folds mentoring into the same product; the closest analogue keeps coaching in a separate sister brand, which is exactly the gap a stacked offer walks into. The mentoring layer is delivered by people who have sold managed service businesses, and the site's "15+ M&A Projects" claim sits alongside mergers and acquisitions (M&A) work as a listed service rather than a war story.

The other thing that separates them is that you can read the prices. Tutor, the entry tier, is £249 a month for supported bookkeeping training; Clarity, the full management-accounts product, starts at £695 a month; tax and accounts start at £149 a month. In a category where almost everyone gates pricing behind a discovery call, publishing a rate card is a statement about how they expect to win. The stack is Xero-native, which is the natural fit in the United Kingdom and increasingly relevant to the subset of United States MSPs that run Xero and currently have no domestic specialist to call.

Best fityou want the books, the monthly pack and the person who argues with you about pricing to be the same firm.

Think twice ifyou need a large local United States team today. The firm is based in the United Kingdom and Xero-native; if you are a QuickBooks shop wanting on-the-ground United States delivery, read entries 2 to 6 first.

Instrumental homepage positioning outsourced bookkeeping and financial operations built exclusively for MSPs
instrumentalmsp.com, captured 24 August 2026

"Outsourced bookkeeping & financial operations, built exclusively for MSPs." That exclusivity claim held up everywhere we read: the chart of accounts is described as built to MSP practice with proper cost-of-goods and revenue matching, the dashboards are MSP metrics rather than a generic profit and loss reformat, and the PSA integrations named are the real ones: ConnectWise, Autotask, Halo, into QuickBooks. The revenue band is stated plainly on the site, $2M to $10M, which is the honest way to say who they are for. Coaching lives in a sister brand, MSP Advisor, run by David Wilkeson, whose book with N-able's Robert Wilburn gives the firm a public track record most bookkeeping shops cannot show.

What you cannot do is read a price. The site's own framing is that the added forecasting and dashboards typically land at roughly what you already pay for bookkeeping alone, which is a pitch rather than a number. No aggregate client count is published either, only named testimonials. If entry 1 is the model where mentoring is in the product, this is the model where strategy arrives as a monthly CFO-level review and the coaching is a separate engagement with a separate brand.

Best fita $2M to $10M United States MSP on QuickBooks that wants its books, forecasts and dashboards run by people who only do MSPs.

Think twice ifyou want a price before a call, or you are below the stated band; smaller shops are pointed at entries 4 and 7.

Dedicated MSP page covering PSA alignment, margin visibility and M&A readiness
Stride Services homepage with the headline Financial Strategy That Fuels Growth
stride.services, captured 24 August 2026

Stride is the one firm on this page where year-round tax planning sits inside the core United States offer rather than arriving as a bolt-on, and for a lot of owners that is the actual pain: the books live in one place, the tax return in another, and nobody optimises across the two. The MSP page is specific about the work: PSA and accounting system alignment, revenue cycle and margin visibility, valuation and M&A readiness support. "Over 100 clients rely on Stride" is the site's own number, and the team page names its partners and staff, which is more than several larger firms in this category manage.

The honest framing is that Stride is a strong accounting firm with a real MSP practice, not an MSP-exclusive shop: the homepage leads with "Financial Strategy That Fuels Growth" for service businesses broadly. No pricing is published, and the site names no specific PSA products, so the sharpest call question here is which PSA-to-ledger syncs they have actually run for MSPs like yours.

Best fityou want accounting, advisory and the tax return under one United States roof.

Think twice ifMSP exclusivity is your filter, or you want named PSA integrations on the site before you book the call.

MSP Beans homepage offering MSP bookkeeping, accounting, payroll and invoicing with published pricing
mspbeans.com, captured 24 August 2026

The most transparent pricing in the category, full stop: an eleven-row table banded by your annual revenue and client count, starting at $1,395 a month below $750K and topping out at $6,495 a month for shops between $7.5M and $10M. You can budget this firm without speaking to anyone, which only entries 1 and 9 otherwise allow. The pitch is pure back office: bookkeeping, payroll, quoting, automatic invoicing, receivables, vendor management, reconciled against the PSAs MSPs actually run, with ConnectWise, Autotask, Kaseya BMS and HaloPSA all named. Rick Rudolph runs it while still running his own MSP, so the person designing your close has your job.

Two flags from verification, both worth knowing and neither disqualifying. The site's own meta description advertises "as little as $1,000 a month" while its pricing table starts at $1,395, so quote the table, not the ad copy. And the client page still carries an unfinished testimonials placeholder, which tells you the marketing is young; the named client list (Solve IT Solutions, RimeTech, Tech in a Flash, Scott & Scott) is there to check instead. This is a bookkeeping engine, not a CFO: strategy is not on the menu, and that clarity is part of the appeal.

Best fityou want the back office done to a published price by someone who runs the same PSA stack you do.

Think twice ifyou want forecasting, benchmarks or someone to challenge your pricing. That is a different service level; see entries 1, 2 and 5.

MSP CFO and Accounting homepage offering CFO and accounting services for MSPs
mspcfoandaccounting.com, captured 24 August 2026

Where most firms here start at the ledger and grow upward, this one starts at the CFO seat and brings the accounting with it: profitability by area of business, projections and budgets, acquisition readiness, then the monthly close, billing and licence reconciliation underneath so the strategy is standing on numbers the same firm produced. The distinctive line items are the operational ones few finance firms will touch: PSA financial configuration, agreement maintenance, even ticket administration, which is the plumbing that decides whether your margin reports mean anything. John Risko's background, three decades in financial strategy including CFO of a telecom MSP, is the product; the firm is built entirely around him.

That is also the limitation. No pricing is published, no client list or case studies are up yet, and a one-principal firm scales by calendar. Engagements run by project or month to month, which suits an owner who wants CFO thinking for a defined push, a pricing overhaul, an acquisition run-up, without a retainer designed to never end.

Best fityou want an experienced MSP CFO's judgement on tap, with the monthly accounting done by the same hands.

Think twice ifyou want published rates, reference clients you can call today, or a large team behind the principal.

Financials 360 homepage offering MSP bookkeeping services built for ConnectWise and HaloPSA
financials360.net, captured 24 August 2026

The narrowest and clearest positioning of the pure bookkeeping shops: the entire offer is structured around how ConnectWise PSA and HaloPSA generate revenue and cost inputs, with the ledger treated as the destination rather than the starting point. That is the right way round for an MSP, and the site is unusually specific about what the core service covers: vendor, licensing and subscription expense coding, profit and loss aligned with PSA data, and a consistent month-end cadence. The About page describes a team built by CPAs and MSP owners, and names all eight people, which for a firm this size is better disclosure than most of the category manages.

The limits are the mirror of the focus. If you run Autotask, Syncro or Kaseya, you are outside the two PSAs the whole offer is built on, and nothing on the site suggests otherwise. No pricing is published, and no client counts or case studies are up, so the proof burden lands on the first call. One small find from our own domain checks: the firm lives at financials360.net, and the matching .com is an unrelated parked domain, so type carefully.

Best fita ConnectWise or HaloPSA shop that wants its books coded the way the PSA thinks.

Think twice ifyou run any other PSA, or you want strategy and forecasting in the same engagement.

Synergy Bookkeeping homepage offering trusted bookkeeping for service-based businesses

A founder-run practice, and honest about what it is: a bookkeeping shop whose MSP landing page is headlined "Bookkeeping for MSPs Who Need More Than Basic Data Entry" and talks about monthly recurring revenue (MRR), vendor costs and cash-flow confusion rather than generic small-business copy. Scott Phillips' own bio describes three decades in business and technology, and the QuickBooks credentials are specific and checkable: ProAdvisor Gold Tier, Online certifications, payroll certification. For a sub-$1M MSP whose books are a shoebox, this is the shape of firm that fixes it.

Scale is the trade. MSPs share the client list with law firms, nonprofits and medical practices, there is no published pricing, no client count, and no PSA integration story: this is QuickBooks-side bookkeeping, not ConnectWise-to-ledger reconciliation. If agreement-level margin reporting out of your PSA is the goal, entries 4 and 6 are built for that and this one is not pretending to be.

Best fita smaller MSP that needs clean, reliable QuickBooks bookkeeping from a named human.

Think twice ifyou need PSA-aligned reporting or an MSP-exclusive firm; that is a different tier of the market.

Reconciled Solutions homepage inviting owners to finally understand the story their numbers are telling
reconciledsolutions.net, captured 24 August 2026

The one firm here whose method is the headline: Reconciled Solutions runs on Profit First, the cash-allocation system from Mike Michalowicz's book, and the MSP page applies it specifically: recurring versus project work job-costed separately, vendor and licence expenses allocated by client, cash-flow forecasting built on the allocation discipline. The MSP material is real rather than boilerplate: ConnectWise and Autotask are named, the technician cost problem is described correctly, and the Ergon Consulting Group case study carries actual numbers, including cash reserves growing from $2,800 to $40,000. Founded in 2006, this is also the longest-operating firm on the page by a decade.

The honest label is a Profit First firm with a well-built MSP practice, not an MSP specialist: the brand centres on coaching high-achieving small-business owners across several verticals. If the discipline problem is bigger than the bookkeeping problem, that is exactly the right shape. One number is published, $1,885 for the assessment and QuickBooks setup; the ongoing tiers are structured on the site but unpriced.

Best fitan owner whose real issue is cash discipline, and who wants a coaching framework wrapped around the books.

Think twice ifyou want an MSP-only firm or benchmarks against other MSPs; the comparison set here is small businesses broadly.

enkel.ca, captured 24 August 2026

Enkel is on this page for two reasons: it is the only North American firm in the set that treats Xero as a first-class platform, and it publishes real prices: bookkeeping from $1,000 a month, fractional controllership from $1,000, a fractional CFO from $1,200, with add-ons priced individually and a discount for annual prepay. "A Dedicated Financial Operations Team. Minus the Full-Time Cost." is the homepage line, and the structure underneath it, bookkeeping up to controllership up to CFO, is the same ladder this whole page is about. A stated SOC 2 Type II certification is rare at this end of the market and worth something if your clients ask security questions about your vendors.

Read the fine print before getting attached: this is a Canadian firm for Canadian businesses. Every regional reference on the live site says Canada, nothing offers United States service, and it is not an MSP specialist; it serves Canadian businesses and nonprofits broadly. It sits here as proof that a Xero-native, published-price finance stack exists in North America, and as the option for Canadian MSP owners, who are otherwise unserved by this list. United States owners on Xero should read entry 1.

Best fita Canadian MSP on Xero or QuickBooks Online that wants a priced, tiered finance function.

Think twice ifyou are in the United States, or you want MSP-specific reporting; neither is on offer here.

Sizing

Which service level actually fits you

The right answer moves with your revenue more than with anything on a feature list.

01

Under about $1M revenue

A clean ledger and a chart of accounts built for recurring revenue. A specialist bookkeeper is affordable at this size and fixes the thing a generalist gets wrong first: revenue recognition on agreements. A fractional CFO is premature.

02

$1M to $3M

Monthly management accounts become the difference between running the business and guessing. This is where gross margin per agreement, labour loading and effective rate per technician start paying for the fee that produces them.

03

$3M to $10M

A fractional CFO or FD earns their keep: pricing decisions, cash planning around hiring, vendor consolidation, and a finance function your managers can query without going through you.

04

Approaching a transaction

Buying, selling or raising, you want a finance partner who has sat through MSP due diligence before. Two years of clean, consistent management accounts is the cheapest multiple-protection available, and it cannot be reconstructed retroactively. Where your number might land is on the MSP value benchmark.

On the call

Questions to ask on every call

  • How many MSPs do you serve today, and what share of your client base are they?
  • Which PSA-to-ledger syncs have you actually run: ConnectWise, Autotask, Halo, Syncro, and into which ledger?
  • How do you handle deferred revenue on annual prepaid agreements?
  • Who does the actual bookkeeping work, and where do they sit?
  • What does my monthly pack contain, and on which working day does it arrive?

The PSA question is the sharpest one on the list. A firm that has never reconciled agreement billing out of a PSA will learn on your books.

Watch for

Red flags

  • An "industries" page with MSPs listed between dentists and restaurants. That is a landing page, not a specialism.
  • No named people anywhere on the site. You are hiring judgement, and judgement has a name.
  • Pricing that only appears after a discovery call. Three firms on this page publish rates, so it is possible in this category.
  • Benchmarks quoted with no source. Ask whose data it is and how many MSPs are in the set.
Adjacent

Who this page deliberately leaves out

Three adjacent categories are excluded on purpose. Peer groups and benchmarks, Service Leadership and its index, TruMethods, Bering McKinley, sell accountability and comparison data, not books; joining one is a different purchase from hiring any firm above, and plenty of owners do both. Financial tooling, billing reconciliation, payment portals, profitability analytics, is software that sits beside the ledger rather than a firm that owns it, so it belongs on a stack page rather than this one.

And in the United Kingdom, Hayward Wright is the nearest like-for-like alternative to entry 1, bookkeeping through virtual finance director for information technology businesses across several offices, and Mercury Accounting as a smaller Welsh option with an MSP page. We did not verify either against its live site to the standard of the entries above, so they are names to check rather than recommendations, and we are not going to describe businesses we have not read.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does an MSP-specialist accountant do differently from a generalist?

A generalist keeps your books legal. A specialist makes them tell you the truth about the business: revenue recognised properly on agreements, deferred revenue on annual prepays, vendor and licence pass-through coded so gross margin per agreement is real, and the ledger reconciled against the PSA rather than maintained beside it. The practical test is the PSA question. Ask which PSA-to-ledger syncs the firm has actually run. A generalist has not run any.

How much does MSP bookkeeping cost?

Only three firms on this page publish rates. MSP Beans starts at $1,395 a month, banded by your annual revenue. The MSP Finance Team starts at £249 a month for its bookkeeping training tier and from £695 a month for full management accounts. Enkel starts at $1,000 a month in Canada. Everyone else quotes after a discovery call, so if you go that route, send the same scope document to at least three firms and compare like for like.

Should an MSP run Xero or QuickBooks?

In the United States the default is QuickBooks Online, and every United States firm on this page is built around it. Xero is the stronger default in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The deciding input is not the ledger itself but what your PSA syncs with cleanly and what your accountant is native in. Worth noting: a United States MSP running Xero currently has no domestic specialist firm on this list to choose from, which says something about where that lane stands.

When does an MSP need a fractional CFO instead of a bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper fixes the ledger. Monthly management accounts usually start earning their fee between $1M and $3M in revenue. A fractional CFO makes sense when the decisions start outrunning your finance instincts: pricing changes, a big hire, debt, an acquisition on either side of the table. If a transaction is anywhere on your horizon, two years of clean management accounts is the cheapest multiple-protection you can buy.

Which financial metrics should an MSP actually track?

Gross margin per agreement, not just blended. Labour loading, meaning how much technician time each agreement actually consumes against what it was priced for. Effective rate per technician hour. Monthly recurring revenue (MRR) against project revenue, because the mix drives your valuation. Deferred revenue, so prepaid cash never reads as profit. If your current accountant cannot produce these, that is the gap this page exists to close.
