A search engine optimization (SEO) audit for a managed service provider (MSP) checks whether buyers can find a page for each service you sell, in each city you serve, and whether that page can win the call. Start with crawl and index access, then tracking, then service and city pages, then your Google Business Profile (GBP) if you meet clients in person. Proof, buyer-question content, artificial intelligence (AI) answer visibility and links come after. Score every check below as pass, fail, insufficient data or not applicable, and fix the failures in that order.
Generic checklists stop at broken links and title tags. Those still matter, and NUOPTIMA's technical SEO audit checklist covers them in depth. This page covers what an MSP site gets wrong that a generic list never asks about. It is the ground NUOPTIMA's MSP SEO program audits before it builds anything, written so your own team can run it. What the done-for-you version costs is on the pricing page.
What to Fix First
- Crawl and index access. A robots.txt or firewall block limits what search engines and AI assistants can discover and read on your site. Google can still index a blocked page address it finds through links, just without a description, and assistants differ: Perplexity says its fetcher for user requests generally ignores robots.txt, while its search crawler follows it. Check crawling and indexing in Google, and each assistant's search and user-request access, separately. Fix first whichever block hits the channel that brings you work.
- Tracking. Without it you cannot tell which fix produced a booked call.
- Service and city pages. These are the pages buyers land on, so most of the revenue sits here.
- Google Business Profile and citations. If you are eligible for a profile, they decide who shows in the map results for your cities.
- Internal links. Cheap to fix, and they tell search engines which pages matter.
- Proof. Case studies and reviews turn a visit into a call.
- Buyer-question content. It feeds the money pages and the AI answers.
- AI answer visibility. Baseline it early, judge it last.
- Links and mentions. Slowest to move, so start once the pages are worth linking to.
Crawl and Index Access
| Check | How to check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Money pages are indexed | In Google Search Console, paste each service and city page into the inspection bar at the top | Every page meant to rank on its own reports as on Google with the canonical you chose; a deliberate duplicate reports Google's selected canonical as the page you intended, and that page is indexed |
| Bot filtering does not block crawlers | Read robots.txt, then ask whoever runs your host, content delivery network (CDN) or web application firewall (WAF) which bot rules are switched on | Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed; any AI blocking you chose is limited to training crawlers |
| Canonicals are clean | View the source of each service page and find the canonical tag | Each page meant to rank on its own points to itself; a deliberate duplicate points to the page you want to rank, not to the home page by default |
| Redirects are one hop | Open your old service page addresses from a past site or an old brochure with the browser's network panel or a redirect checker open, and read the chain and status codes | Each lands on its closest new page in one permanent redirect, never on the home page |
| Core Web Vitals pass | Search Console's Core Web Vitals report, which uses real visitor data | Largest contentful paint 2.5 seconds or less, interaction to next paint 200 milliseconds or less, cumulative layout shift 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile of visits. If the report shows no data, mark it insufficient data and run PageSpeed Insights on key pages to find problems; a lab test is a diagnostic, not a pass |
The firewall row matters more for an MSP than for most businesses, because you run security for a living and your own site often inherits the same strict settings. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, while blocking GPTBot only opts you out of model training. A broad rule that blocks every AI crawler switches off both. On the Google side, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews.
Tracking That Ties to Booked Calls
- Google Search Console is verified for the whole domain, and the sitemap lists only pages you want found.
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4) marks booked calls, form submissions and phone clicks as key events. Google renamed conversions to key events, so check the right screen.
- Your customer relationship management (CRM) system tags every lead with its source, including AI assistants as a separate source.
- You can report searches that leave out your company name. Branded searches come from people who already know you.
At Cortavo, leads were tagged at source in the CRM before any content shipped, which is why the case study can report contracted sales rather than traffic curves.
Service Pages per Offer and per City
| Check | How to check | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| One page per offer | List what you sell, then match each line to a page | Managed information technology (IT), cybersecurity, compliance, cloud and any other offer you quote each have their own page |
| One page per city you serve | List the cities your clients sit in | Each city has a page with local detail, not the same text with the name swapped |
| Pages answer buyer questions first | Read the first screen of each page | What you do, who for, where, and how engagements are priced or scoped |
| One clear ask | Count the calls to action on each page | One, usually a conversation, with the phone number beside it |
This is the biggest gap on most MSP sites. When NUOPTIMA audited Chrysalis Tech Group in September 2026, the site had no pages for specific industries, specific Houston suburbs or pricing, and almost no visits came from searches that left out the company name. In a cybersecurity example from the United Kingdom, Microminder Cybersecurity's program was built on 105 service-specific landing pages, and by July 2024, 23 months in, it was running at roughly 20 quality leads a month. For the city side, see NUOPTIMA's guide to MSP local SEO.
Google Business Profile and Citations
Check eligibility before anything else here. Google allows a profile only for a business that meets customers in person, at a location they can visit or at their own sites. A fully remote MSP marks the profile checks not applicable, keeps the citation check and puts the effort into directories and content.
- The primary category matches your main service, with secondary categories for the rest.
- Services on the profile match the service pages on your site.
- Your business name, address and phone number match on the profile, the site and every directory listing.
- Reviews arrive every month, and each one gets a reply.
- The website link on the profile goes to the right page for that office.
The full walk-through is in Google Business Profile for MSPs.
Internal Links to Money Pages
- Every service and city page sits one click from the main menu.
- Each article links to the one service or city page it supports.
- No money page is an orphan with zero links pointing to it.
- Link text names the service ("co-managed IT in Dallas"), not "click here".
Proof Buyers Can Check
- At least one case study per main offer, with a named client, the starting point and a dated result.
- Reviews shown near the ask on service pages, not only on a testimonials page.
- Claims your team can keep. "Zero downtime" invites the one question you cannot answer.
Content That Answers Buyer Questions
- You can name the 20 questions prospects ask on first calls, and each one has a page or a section that answers it.
- Articles cover cost, switching providers, compliance demands and comparisons with in-house IT.
- Your engineers have checked the technical claims.
- Nothing is published that a buyer would not miss if it vanished.
AI Answer Visibility
Write 10 to 20 prompts a buyer would type into an AI assistant, such as "best managed IT provider for a law firm in Dallas". Run the same set every month on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and log who gets named and which pages get cited. Keep prompts that include your name apart from the rest. A fixed set is what makes the number worth tracking: Cortavo's 224 tracked mentions, four times its closest competitor by May 2026, were counted against the same prompts every month. NUOPTIMA's guide to getting your MSP recommended by ChatGPT covers what moves the result.
Links and Mentions
- Links come from sites your buyers read: local business press, industry associations, vendor partner directories.
- Vendor and partner listings link to the matching service page, not only the home page.
- Mentions of your company name without a link are tracked, and the useful ones are asked for a link.
- No paid link packages from sites that publish on any topic for a fee.
