ChatGPT is not the only artificial intelligence (AI) assistant your buyers ask. Perplexity runs a live web search and shows numbered citations, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's search index, and Microsoft Copilot grounds its web answers in Bing. So a managed service provider (MSP) that wants to be named in AI answers needs three foundations, not one: a site Perplexity's crawler can reach, pages Google has indexed with a snippet, and pages Bing has indexed and kept fresh.
This guide sticks to what each vendor has published. It is one part of the wider generative engine optimization (GEO) program for MSPs.
Why Copilot Matters More for MSPs
Your buyers work inside Microsoft 365 all day. Microsoft's documentation says that when web search is enabled, Microsoft Copilot (recently renamed from Microsoft 365 Copilot) and Copilot Chat may fetch information from the Bing search service.
Copilot usually does not send the buyer's whole question to Bing. It generates a query of a few words and sends that, with user and tenant identifiers removed; only a very short prompt may go in full. A long question about co-managed information technology (IT) for a 150-person accounting firm becomes a short Bing query, and if your pages do not show up in Bing for it, Copilot has nothing of yours to cite.
You probably manage two related settings for clients. An administrator can turn web search off for a tenant, and for Government Community Cloud (GCC) and Department of Defense tenants, Microsoft says web search is off by default. If you sell to government contractors, their Copilot may never reach the open web at all.
Perplexity: Live Search, Numbered Citations
Perplexity's help center says it searches the internet in real time and that each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources. Its crawler documentation says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results, is not used to crawl content for training AI foundation models, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt. Robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to register. A separate fetcher, Perplexity-User, visits a page when a user's question calls for it, and Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt because the user requested the fetch. Perplexity publishes the internet protocol (IP) address ranges for both, so a firewall can tell them from impostors.
What to do differently:
- Check robots.txt and your bot filtering rules. MSP sites often run strict security settings, and a rule that blocks unknown bots can block PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User too. Allow both from the IP ranges Perplexity publishes.
- Read the citations. Perplexity shows which page won each answer, so it is the easiest engine to diagnose. If a directory keeps winning, get listed there; our directories guide for MSPs covers which are worth it.
Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google's Rules
Google Search Central says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional technical requirements. Google also says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup for these features. Both features may use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics before writing the answer.
What to do differently:
- Treat classic search engine optimization (SEO) eligibility as the entry ticket. If a service page is not indexed in Google with a snippet, it cannot appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Build for fan-out. A question about co-managed IT for a manufacturer in Columbus can split into searches on the service, the industry and the city. That does not mean one page per dimension. Google says its systems can understand several topics on one page, so give a topic its own page only when it serves a distinct buyer need and you have real evidence to put on it.
- Check templates for nosnippet, data-nosnippet or a tight max-snippet. Google lists these as controls that limit what it shows.
- Check Settings, then Search generative AI, in Search Console. That control can exclude your links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Google Discover without affecting the rest of Search. A property can inherit the setting from a parent domain property, so check the parent too. Google says the control reached all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026.
- Open the generative AI performance report in Search Console. It shows impressions and the pages that appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the same data still counts in the overall Performance report.
The standalone Gemini app is less documented. Google's Gemini Apps help says responses sometimes show sources, including public websites. Google has not published how the app chooses them. It does document one control: the Google-Extended token in robots.txt decides whether content Google crawls can be used for grounding Gemini Apps answers, and the same token also covers training future Gemini models. Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. Check robots.txt for a Google-Extended block, then test the app separately, because allowing it guarantees nothing. Our view on llms.txt, which Google says it does not need, is in llms.txt and structured data for MSPs.
Copilot: Bing's Index, Bing's Rules
Bing's Webmaster Guidelines say Bing and Copilot rely on the same core crawling, indexing and ranking foundation as traditional search. The guidelines tell site owners to use IndexNow to notify Bing when pages are added, updated or removed, which Bing says reduces outdated references in Copilot responses. They also name two directives most sites never check: NOARCHIVE prevents content from being used in Copilot responses, and NOCACHE limits Copilot to the page address, title and snippet.
What to do differently:
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit a sitemap with accurate last-modified dates.
- Add IndexNow to your publishing step so new and changed pages reach Bing quickly.
- Search your templates for noarchive and nocache.
- If clients visit your office or your engineers visit clients, claim and verify your listing in Bing Places for Business, and make the name, address and phone match your Google Business Profile; a remote-only MSP skips this step.
- Watch the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, which counts citations of your pages.
Where ChatGPT Fits
OpenAI says a site is eligible for ChatGPT search when it allows OAI-SearchBot and its host or content delivery network (CDN) allows OpenAI's published crawler addresses. It also says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, sending them rewritten queries, and it links Microsoft's privacy statement among those providers. OpenAI does not say how much each provider shapes answers, so treat Bing work as a likely bonus for ChatGPT, not a guarantee. The full MSP playbook is in how to get your MSP recommended by ChatGPT.
The Four Engines Side by Side
| Engine | Where web answers come from (published) | Gate to check first | Where you can see citations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | Real-time web search, numbered citations on every answer | PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt; PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User not blocked by bot filtering | The numbered citations in each answer |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google Search index, with query fan-out | Page indexed and eligible for a snippet; not excluded under Search generative AI in Search Console | Search Console generative AI performance report (impressions and pages), also counted in the overall Performance report |
| Gemini app | Not published in the same detail; sources shown sometimes | Google-Extended not blocked in robots.txt (it covers grounding and training); then test directly | The Sources button, when present |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing search service, using short generated queries | Bing indexing, IndexNow, no NOARCHIVE or NOCACHE | Copilot Chat citation section; Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance |
| ChatGPT | Web search, sometimes through partner search providers | OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI crawler addresses allowed | Inline citations and the Sources panel |
Test All of Them With One Prompt Set
One screenshot from one engine tells you nothing. Full mechanics are in our guide to tracking AI search citations.
- Write 10 to 20 prompts a buyer would type, mostly unbranded, plus one or two with your name. Keep branded results separate.
- Run every prompt monthly on Perplexity, Google AI Mode, the Gemini app, Copilot and ChatGPT. Use Copilot from a work account with web content on, as your buyer would.
- Log whether you are named, which page is cited, and who is named instead.
- In Copilot Chat, open the citation section. Microsoft shows the exact web search queries sent to Bing, kept in the thread for 24 hours. Run those queries in Bing and see where you rank.
- Read the branded answers closely. In a September 2026 audit of Chrysalis Tech Group, a Houston MSP, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity did not name it for local buyer questions, and some described a different company when asked about it by name.
Expect the engines to move at different speeds. WANT Branding, a business-to-business branding agency, tracked a fixed ten-prompt matrix across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. None of the four cited its site in an April 2026 spot check, three did by May, and all four have in every run since July, with ChatGPT the last to start.
Where to Start This Week
Check that robots.txt and your bot filtering allow PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot and Googlebot. Verify Bing Webmaster Tools, claim Bing Places if you are eligible, and run your first prompt set. If you want it done for you, with your buyers' prompts tested on every engine, request a free AI visibility audit.
