Generative engine optimization (GEO) costs anywhere from $29 a month for an artificial intelligence (AI) visibility tool to $15,000 or more a month for a full agency program. A managed service provider (MSP) usually ends up buying one of five things: a tool at $29 to $699 a month, a one-time audit at $1,500 to $7,500, a narrow add-on or pilot at $1,500 to $3,000 a month, a focused retainer at $3,000 to $7,500 a month, or a full program at $7,500 to $15,000 or more a month. Tool prices come from vendors' published plans. The service figures are NUOPTIMA working estimates, not survey data.
Four kinds of work move a quote from one band to the next: measurement, technical fixes, content and outside authority. A quote that does not show how much of each it includes cannot be compared fairly with another.
GEO Price Ranges by Type of Buy
Compare scope before you compare price. Two vendors can both say "GEO" while one sells a dashboard and the other sells content, technical work and authority building. Those are different jobs at different prices.
| Buy | Typical cost | What it should cover | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monitoring tool only | $29 to $699 per month, vendors' published plans | Prompt tracking, citations, competitor mentions and reports | Someone on your team already turns data into work |
| Audit or baseline | $1,500 to $7,500 one time, NUOPTIMA working estimate | Buyer prompt set, current visibility, competitor shortlist, technical and content gaps, and a prioritized statement of work (SOW) | You need the problem sized before any monthly spend |
| Add-on or narrow pilot | $1,500 to $3,000 per month, NUOPTIMA working estimate | Tracking plus page and technical fixes for one service line, usually on top of existing search engine optimization (SEO) | One service, one market, a sound site already in place |
| Focused retainer | $3,000 to $7,500 per month, NUOPTIMA working estimate | Measurement, technical fixes, new and refreshed pages, and basic authority work | One or two priority services in one market |
| Full program | $7,500 to $15,000+ per month, NUOPTIMA working estimate | Strategy, technical execution, content production, public relations (PR), list placement management and reporting | Several services, markets or verticals, or a large competitive gap |
| Paid placements and media fees | Varies, passed through with receipts | Sponsored list entries, directory listings, publication fees | Only when itemized and tied to a named authority goal |
For SEO-only retainers, NUOPTIMA's SEO pricing benchmarks give separate bands. How the same work gets packaged as a retainer, project or performance deal is covered in the guide to retainer, project and performance pricing. What an MSP of your revenue should budget, and how many new clients it takes to pay back, is on the page about GEO budgets by MSP size, with payback math.
What Moves the Price: Four Workstreams
GEO cost comes from four workstreams. If a proposal does not price them separately, ask for the split.
Measurement. How many buyer prompts are tracked, against how many competitors, in which AI assistants, how often, and how many analyst hours go into turning results into decisions. The subscription is cheap. The analyst hours are not. A visibility report earns its fee only when it changes the next page, fix or outreach target. How the tracking itself works is covered in the guide to tracking AI citations.
Technical foundation. Crawlable pages, clean internal links, structured data (schema), and clear service and location pages. Your content management system (CMS) sets much of this cost. On a modern site with clean templates, most fixes are quick. On an old theme where every change needs a developer, the same fixes become billable development hours.
Content depth. Pages that answer what buyers ask before they call you: service pages, vertical pages, comparison pages, proof pages, security process pages and, where it makes sense, a page explaining how you price. Cost rises with research, time from your subject matter experts and editorial review. A blog calendar with "AI" added to the titles does not count.
Authority. AI answers draw on sources beyond your own site: reviews, directory listings, list articles, partner pages, expert quotes and press coverage. Earning those takes outreach time and sometimes third-party fees, which is why padding most often enters a quote here.
The workstreams map onto the bands. Measurement alone is tool or audit money. Add technical and content work for one service line and you are in the add-on or focused retainer band. Add sustained authority work across several services or markets and you are paying for a full program.
A fair proposal shows four numbers: what is one time, what is monthly, what goes to third parties and what the agency marks up.
Where GEO Quotes Hide Cost
The most common pattern is relabeling. Last year's SEO scope of four blog posts and a ranking report comes back as "AI search" with the same deliverables and a higher fee. Put the old and new scopes side by side and compare them line by line.
Four other patterns are worth checking.
One "AI optimization" line. Ask which prompts are tracked, which assistants are included and what the vendor does when a prompt does not mention you. If the answer is a slide rather than a list, the line is padding.
Monthly fees for one-time fixes. Schema cleanup, template changes and crawl fixes can justify a real setup budget. Once they are done, they should drop off the invoice unless there is ongoing development.
Bundled placements. When a list article, directory or publication charges a fee, you should see the receipt and the markup. If an agency, ours included, arranges a paid placement, the fee should be itemized.
Monitoring without a baseline. A report that does not record your starting visibility, competitor set and prompt list cannot show progress, so you cannot tell what the fee bought.
Contract terms change the total as well: minimum terms, cancellation, and who owns the pages, prompt lists and data when you leave. The GEO pricing models guide covers those terms. For a full agency vetting checklist, use the framework for vetting an MSP SEO agency.
Tool, Agency or In-House: The Cost Comparison
Tool only. Published pricing sets the floor. OtterlyAI lists Lite at $29 per month and Premium at $489 per month on monthly billing. Scrunch lists its Core plan at $250 per month, with Enterprise priced on request. AthenaHQ lists Starter at $295 per month and Enterprise as custom. Ahrefs lists Brand Radar at $199 per month for one AI platform or $699 per month for all platforms.
A tool shows whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews mention you, which sources those answers use and where competitors appear. It will not rebuild a service page, interview your technical lead or earn a third-party mention. For most owner-led MSPs the subscription is the smallest line in the budget. The real cost is the hours someone spends acting on it.
In-house. The case is strong when you already employ a capable marketer, a developer who ships site changes within the week and a leader who turns visibility data into sales priorities. Then a tool plus a one-time audit may be all you need to buy.
It is weak when you have to hire from scratch. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for marketing managers at $166,790 and for market research analysts at $78,760, both as of May 2025. One of each comes to $245,550 a year before benefits, software, writers, design, development or placement fees.
Agency. At the working-estimate bands above, a focused retainer comes to $36,000 to $90,000 a year. A full program starts at $90,000 a year and reaches $180,000 at $15,000 a month. Both sit below those two salaries, but a hire does more than GEO. If you can keep senior staff busy across brand, content, analytics, sales support and the website, hiring can win. If the work is narrower than that, an agency or a specialist freelancer is usually the cheaper buy. The same trade-off for SEO is laid out in the guide to agency, in-house or freelance SEO.
When NUOPTIMA is the wrong buy. NUOPTIMA sells a managed GEO program, so weigh this page accordingly. If you already have the marketer and developer described above, you do not need a managed program from us or anyone else: buy a tool, pay for a one-time audit and give your marketer the fix list. If you can spend less than $1,500 a month, the bottom of the working-estimate add-on band, put it into SEO basics first. If you have no case studies, few reviews or nobody who answers inbound inquiries within 15 minutes during business hours, fix those before buying GEO from anyone. The list of signs your MSP is not ready for GEO covers what to fix first.
Which Buy Fits Your Gap
Start from the missing work. The useful question is which workstream explains why AI assistants do not name you today, and the answer points to a band.
If you do not know your current AI visibility, buy an audit before any retainer. If you know the gap and have staff to act on it, buy a tool and name an owner. If one service line needs better pages and technical cleanup on an otherwise sound site, an add-on or focused retainer fits. If your site lacks proof, content and authority across several services, you are buying a full program. If you are already visible but losing to better-known competitors, move budget from new pages into authority and third-party validation.
For a sense of what a year of this work can return, one published engagement: Cortavo, an MSP, invested $88,500 over 12 months in SEO and AI search work with NUOPTIMA. The Cortavo case study attributes $403,330 in contracted sales to organic and AI search in Cortavo's customer relationship management (CRM) system, a 4.6x return on that investment. Treat it as one client's year rather than a forecast for yours. To model return on your own numbers, use the guide to measuring GEO return for MSPs. For how long the work takes to show, see how long GEO takes.
The right budget is the lowest one that pays for the missing work. Below that, you are buying a dashboard. Above it, ask the vendor what the extra money ships.
If you hold a GEO proposal and want a second read on its scope and price, or want the workstream mix sized for your MSP, book a call.
